Solly Shifts Gears From Race Tracks to Online Race Tracks and Streaming Acts

In the high-stakes world of motorsports, dreams are forged in the crucible of speed, precision, and unwavering determination. For Solly, those dreams once centered around the thrill of the race track and the competitive spirit of professional racing. But life, much like a challenging circuit, is full of turns.

Born to a Chinese mother and an Australian father, Solly spent his early years in Australia before moving to Hong Kong, where he spent most of his childhood. His love for racing was nurtured by annual trips to the famous Macau Grand Prix, a proving ground for future Formula One stars. These experiences laid the foundation for his passion in motorsports.

Today, Solly isn’t behind the wheel of a race car. Instead, he’s at the forefront of a different kind of revolution – one that’s digital, decentralized, and rapidly changing the landscape of gaming and content creation. As an ambassador for Animoca Brands’ Motorverse and a rising star in the Web3 gaming space, Solly has traded the physical track for virtual ones, the pit stops for livestreams, and the checkered flag for community engagement.

But how does one go from aspiring professional racer to a content creator navigating the cutting-edge world of Web3 gaming? And what does a typical day look like for someone straddling the lines between gaming, blockchain technology, and digital content creation?

In this exclusive look into Solly’s world, we’ll explore the unexpected journey that led him to become a key player in the Web3 gaming revolution. From early morning streams to late-night community building, we’ll uncover the challenges, triumphs, and daily routines that define life as a modern content creator in the fast-paced world of Web3 gaming.

From Race Tracks to Digital Spaces

Solly’s journey from the world of motorsports to the forefront of Web3 gaming is a testament to the unpredictable nature of career paths in the digital age. While the excitement of competitive racing once fueled his dreams, the buzz of blockchain and the thrill of emerging technologies have captured his professional passion.

“For a long time, my dream was to pursue a career in professional racing,” Solly reflects. “That obviously, for one reason or another, didn’t happen. But I, you know, just make do with that kind of ‘when life gives you lemons’ type of thing.”

After his full-time racing career ended in 2016, Solly explored various options, including pursuing a degree in Australia and considering a career as a commercial airline pilot. “I thought, hey, you know what’s kind of the next best thing to racing a car is probably flying a plane,” he explains.

The Discovery of Web3 Gaming

However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his pilot training, forcing him to reassess his career path once again. It was during this time of uncertainty that Solly stumbled upon F1 Delta Time, a blockchain-based game that combined his love for racing with the emerging world of Web3 technology.

Intrigued by this new frontier, Solly reached out to Animoca Brands, the company behind F1 Delta Time. In a pivotal moment, Yat Siu from Animoca sent Solly 50-52 articles to read before his interview. “I remember after reading, and I did read all those articles, watch all those videos and I was instantly hooked. I, like, fully understood, you know, more or less not the technical side that understood the vision,” Solly shares.

This crash course in blockchain and Web3 technology opened up a new world of possibilities for Solly. His background in the high-performance world of motorsports provided him with a unique perspective on technology, competition, and community-building – skills that would prove invaluable in his new career.

As he became more entrenched in the Web3 gaming world, he began to see opportunities to create content, build communities, and shape the future of this emerging industry. This transition wasn’t just a career change – it was a reimagining of how his passions and skills could be applied within the gaming world.

A Day in the Life of Solly

Solly’s transition from the racetrack to being engrossed in gaming has resulted in a daily routine that is diverse and dynamic. Let’s take a closer look at how he balances content creation, community engagement, and personal time in the fast-paced world of Web3 gaming.

Morning Routine: Setting the Pace

For Solly, mornings often begin with a burst of energy reminiscent of the starting grid. “Sometimes I have done streams at sort of eight, nine o’clock in the morning,” he shares. These early streams, often part of his W3GP series, set the tone for the day ahead.

After an energizing stream, Solly takes a moment to recharge. “I might take a little break, might, you know, go and make myself a coffee and then get on with it,” he explains. This brief pause allows him to transition smoothly into the rest of his day’s activities.

Afternoon Hustle: Content Creation, Content Consumption and Community Building

As the day progresses, Solly dives deep into content creation. His content creation process is often interspersed with moments of consumption. His girlfriend playfully calls him an “iPad kid” due to his habit of watching videos while doing household chores.

Solly relies heavily on social media and content platforms to keep his finger on the industry’s pulse. “I watch a lot of content, just from, let’s say, from a from a traditional gaming standpoint, I watch a lot of sort of YouTube channels that cover a lot of gaming media, gaming news, and then in web three as well,” he explains. This approach allows him to stay informed about both mainstream gaming trends and Web3-specific developments.

Twitter plays a crucial role in Solly’s information gathering process. “I follow a lot of people, a lot of my friends, a lot of the other content creators I follow are, you know, cover web3 gaming, let’s say, I’d say that’s where my that’s a lot of where my focus is,” he shares. This network of industry insiders and constant engagement with content helps him stay up-to-date with the latest trends and news in the gaming and Web3 spaces.

Multi-Platform Content Strategy

When creating content, it is also diverse and multi-faceted. “I generally create, and llike creating different types of content. Not all of it goes on Twitter, some of it goes on Instagram. Some of it goes, you know, elsewhere,” Solly explains. This multi-platform approach allows him to reach a diverse audience and engage with different segments of the Web3 gaming community.

His content isn’t limited to just streaming. He creates a wide range of content across various platforms:

  • Twitter: For real-time updates, community engagement, and hosting Twitter Spaces
  • Instagram: For visual content and reaching a different audience segment
  • YouTube: For longer-form content and edited videos
  • Podcasts: As part of his W3GP series

Streaming Setup: Tools of the Trade

Solly’s streaming setup reflects his commitment to producing high-quality content. He uses a mix of professional-grade equipment and industry-standard tools to create an engaging streaming experience:

  • A Govi light serves as his main key light
  • An Insta 360 webcam for his main camera
  • A Sony A6700 camera for more polished, edited content
  • Philips Hue lights for customizable background lighting
  • An Elgato Stream Deck for soundboard control and stream management
  • An Elgato Wave Link microphone for clear audio

This setup allows Solly to create a professional streaming environment, whether he’s hosting a W3GP discussion or playing games with his community.

This strategy allows Solly to cater to different audience preferences and maximize his reach within the Web3 gaming community.

Evening Wind-Down: Balancing Work and Personal Life

As evening approaches, Solly doesn’t slow down but rather shifts gears. “If the are no streams at night, I tend to kind of shut everything off, go and watch TV and play with, play with the cats. I’ve got two cats, so they, they’re quite entertaining,” he shares. This glimpse into his personal life underscores the importance he places on work-life balance.

Solly also makes time for family, often playing games like Fortnite with his younger brother. During these gaming sessions, he sometimes uses voice changers and soundboards, adding an extra layer of fun to their interactions.

Community Building and Content Creation in Web3

For Solly, community building is at the heart of his work. His approach combines digital engagement with real-world experiences, creating a unique blend that resonates with his audience.

The W3GP Project: Merging Passions

One of Solly’s standout initiatives is W3GP, a project that beautifully merges his love for motorsports with his current role in Web3 gaming. “I have a platform that I started with Pukerrainbow called W3GP. That’s an F1 specific Twitter Space series, podcast series where before every race, we spend an hour sort of looking forward to the race, looking back to the race previous, and all the kind of the rumors, and we just sort of have a lot of banter around some of the drivers, some of the transfers, some of the rumors and stuff like that,” Solly explains.

This project not only keeps Solly connected to the racing world but also provides a unique entry point for racing fans. “We do have a live stream at the same time as a Twitter space,” he adds, highlighting the multi-platform approach that has become a hallmark of his content strategy.

Real-World Community Experiences

Solly’s community-building extend to face-to-face interactions and shared experiences. “We’ve been hosting events around for now, around Asia. So we’ve only set that community up, I think, three or four months, but we’ve had six events across Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore,” he shares.

These events are not your typical networking meetups. Solly aims to create unique experiences that align with his community’s interests. “We do different events where it’s not just sort of the typical web three networking event, we’ll take them to a simulator racing center, or we’ll do a go karting race or something along those lines,” he explains. This approach helps to strengthen community bonds and create memorable experiences that go beyond digital interactions.

Vision for Web3 Gaming

While Solly is optimistic about the future of Web3 gaming, he’s also pragmatic about the challenges and opportunities it presents. He sees the integration of blockchain technology and gaming as a natural evolution but emphasizes the importance of creating value for users beyond just monetary incentives.

Solly has learned that authenticity is crucial. “If you go into it thinking, I’m only doing this because I want to make money, then the content you’re creating isn’t going to be it just, it’s not going to be content that you love or that you really are passionate about, and the people watching your content will see it,” he advises.

Solly emphasizes the importance of creating content that provides value and enjoyment, both for the creator and the audience. “The goal, the number one goal, is just to have fun, really,” he states. “Games are first and foremost fun, and if I’m having fun playing them, then hopefully people are watching it because they’re entertained, and I’m somehow, you know, giving them, you know, something of value.”

Consistency and Growth in Content Creation

When it comes to his personal goals as a content creator, Solly emphasizes the importance of consistency. “I think the long term goal for that is just to be be more consistent. To be honest, I don’t think I don’t have necessarily a target. I don’t have a number in mind. I don’t have anything like that. It’s more so can I start covering things that I enjoy, that I appreciate, whatever it is, on a consistent basis, whether that’s daily, whether it’s weekly, I’d say would be my goal,” he explains.

This focus on consistency over specific numerical targets reflects Solly’s commitment to quality and authenticity in his content. It’s not about chasing numbers, but about creating valuable, enjoyable content on a regular basis.
