Rainbow Six Siege Reinvents Itself As June Update Brings Free-to-Play Model

Ubisoft’s tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege is getting its most substantial update yet on June 10, 2025. Dubbed “Rainbow Six Siege X,” this major overhaul opens the game to a wider audience with a free-to-play model while adding a new game mode, visual upgrades, and technical improvements that breathe fresh life into the decade-old title.

Free-to-Play Model

Rainbow Six Siege X will adopt a free-to-play structure when it launches on June 10, 2025. The new model grants players free access to multiple game modes including Dual Front, Unranked, and Quick Play.

Free players can earn up to 26 operators through in-game progression, giving newcomers substantial access to the roster without any purchase.

For players wanting the complete experience, premium editions will unlock Ranked Mode, Siege Cup competitions, and access to additional operators beyond those available to free players.

New Dual Front Mode

The update introduces Dual Front, a new six-versus-six area control gameplay mode. This represents a shift from the game’s traditional format and takes place on District, a map created specifically for this mode.

Players who signed up got an early look at Dual Front through the closed beta that ran until March 19 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Access required watching content creators play the game on Twitch to earn a beta invite.

Visual Improvements

Rainbow Six Siege X delivers a visual refresh for classic maps including Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe. These maps will feature enhanced textures of up to 4K resolution, improving the overall visual quality.

Ubisoft plans to continue this visual enhancement with three additional maps receiving similar updates in each future season, gradually modernizing the game’s entire map pool.

The visual changes focus on making lighting more realistic, with subtle adjustments to material details from fundamental elements like brick walls and wooden planks to enhanced lighting and reflections.

Gameplay Enhancements

The update adds new destructible items that create tactical options. Fire extinguishers can generate temporary smoke screens or concuss players caught in their blast. Gas pipes can cut off areas with flames that gradually concentrate before exploding and setting the area on fire temporarily. Metal detectors are now interactive and can be disabled either temporarily or permanently.

Rappelling mechanics have been significantly improved. Players can now rappel around corners and sprint along walls for faster repositioning, though this creates audible noise detectable from inside buildings.

Audio has received a complete overhaul with better sound propagation and reverb. Sound now passes through walls instead of just bouncing around environments, and different spaces produce distinctive acoustic effects—small rooms, large areas, and exterior locations all have unique sound signatures to help players better identify the source and direction of sounds.

Additional Features

A new anti-cheat system called R6 ShieldGuard will be implemented with Rainbow Six Siege X. This system allows for live security updates without scheduled maintenance, making cheats more difficult to create and maintain.

The Pick and Ban phase has been redesigned to be more efficient. Both teams will now choose simultaneously and have an opportunity to adjust their picks and bans when switching between attack and defense roles.

For new players, Ubisoft has created a Clearance Levels onboarding system. This structured progression starts players against bots, then moves them to Quick Match with other players, before introducing them to Unranked mode as the standard playlist that eventually feeds into Ranked play.

Final Thoughts

While not a full sequel, Rainbow Six Siege X represents a significant update to the decade-old tactical shooter. The combination of the new free-to-play model, Dual Front mode, technical improvements, and quality-of-life updates positions the game for continued growth. Launching on June 10, 2025, these changes aim to refresh the experience for existing players while making the game more accessible to newcomers.
